🎞️ 🕰️ It’s time for another BGF project throwback! In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina swept through the Gulf Coast. The eye of the hurricane made landfall near the small town of Pearlington, Mississippi, and a 28-foot storm surge nearly washed the entire town away; only two homes in this town of about 1,600 survived. 🤝 While we don’t consider ourselves to be a relief organization, we knew that our volunteers had the power to help meet the basic needs of this town. After consulting with the Pearlington community, BGF volunteers mobilized to carry out their idea: shelters. Our volunteers designed a 12'x16' shelter that could be used in tandem with the FEMA trailers, offering additional living and storage space that was sorely needed. In the months following the hurricane, hundreds of BGF volunteers traveled to Pearlington, constructing 140 of these shelters for people to use as they rebuilt their lives.🛠️ Our work didn’t end there. Every community building in the county had been destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, so the people of Pearlington requested a space where they could come together. We recruited architects, engineers, and volunteers to build a community center, and it was completed in 2009 – just in time to celebrate four years of rebuilding. 🏘️

👏 Major kudos to Forward Financial Intelligence for lending a hand with the C-Street Cooperative Preschool fence build day last week! It was certainly a warm one, but we can always count on these folks to come through and put in a good day's work. 🪚🔨 Stay tuned to see the finished fence, coming soon! 🌟

🚨Update on the C-Street Cooperative Preschool fence project! Friday’s weather forecast is looking stormy, so we’re changing the plan. ⛈️ We're shifting all our efforts to Saturday, August 10th, and we need skilled volunteers to come out and lend their expertise to hopefully carry this project over the finish line. 💪🛠️ Morning and afternoon spots are still available on our Sign-Up Genius, so follow the link and sign up for a shift if you’re able: https://1l.ink/367JQPW

There’s been great upward progress at Phase II of our school-building project with Limitless Horizons Ixil! 🏫🌅 After a successful prefab slab pour to create the second level, the crew in Guatemala got right to work on the columns, CMU walls, and the window and door headers. 🧱 Their hard work is elevating this school to new heights, and we’re so grateful for their efforts! 👏

⌛🎞️ This week’s BGF throwback again begins in the wake of the 2010 Haiti earthquake. With over one million Haitians suddenly rendered homeless, there was an immediate and dire need for housing. 📐BGF volunteer Mike Stoneking designed a house – called a ti kay, or “small home” in Haitian Creole – with the needs of the Haitian people in mind. These homes, measuring 12’x16’, were designed to be earthquake-, termite-, and hurricane-resistant. The design also took Haitian culture into consideration, incorporating elements important to a traditional home so that families would not only find shelter, but also comfort. Significantly, the use of panels in the construction process meant that each ti kay could be built in a little over a day. 🛠️🤝 At the start of the Ti Kay Program in 2010, skilled BGF volunteers worked to train Haitian crews in the construction process. Gradually, we transitioned this project model to one of Haitian self-sufficiency, as crews took on the management and operation duties. This provided valuable employment opportunities and placed workers in an empowered role to rebuild their communities. Over the course of the program, BGF volunteers and Haitian crews built over 1,000 homes for Haitian families. 🏡

Another volunteer trip to our school remodeling project with Seeds for Progress is in the books! 🏫🌱 BGF volunteers Jim and Devin recently made the trip to the school in Sampaquisoy to install the plumbing for the bathrooms. They dug trenches, installed pipes, and assembled and installed the toilets, providing some on-the-job training for the community helpers along the way.🚰 🛠️ With these new bathrooms, the school will be better equipped to support students’ health, wellbeing, and academic success. Many, many thanks to Jim and Devin, Samuel the interpreter, and the people of Sampaquisoy for welcoming all of us into their community! 🤝

Take a look at this dynamic group of volunteers building benches for our friends over at the Botanical Garden of the Piedmont! 🔨 Shout out to Taylor Pisano, the Blue Ridge Mountains Rotary Club, Nest Realty, and all who came out to volunteer for this project. Many hands certainly made light work, as these volunteers built five benches and a picnic table before lunchtime! 🤝✨ Thanks to their efforts, anyone using the trail will have a spot to sit down, relax, and enjoy the scenery. 🌳🌷
