Injuries likely led the Eagles to sign Shaquille Quarterman

The Eagles added some depth to their linebacker room on Monday morning.

The team signed free agent Shaquille Quarterman, a 2020 fourth-round pick by Jacksonville who has played all four of his NFL seasons with the Jaguars. Quarterman was at practice Monday.

Eagles injury report for Monday

Here is Monday’s injury report:

  1. Will not practice: Oren Burks (knee); Parris Campbell (groin); Mehki Garner (hamstring); Brandon Smith (concussion).

  2. Limited: Mekhi Becton (illness); Josh Jobe (concussion); Eli Ricks (illness); Tyler Steen (ankle).

It’ll be interesting to see if either Steen or Becton takes reps with the first-team offense at right guard given their limited status. Steen started camp as RG1, but his ankle injury opened the door for Becton, a tackle, to slide in and get reps at a new position.

Vic Fangio weighs in on the linebacker competition

No surprise here: Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said the battles at inside linebacker and cornerback remain competitive and no decisions have been made about how the depth chart will look come September.

Fangio was asked specifically about Nakobe Dean, who took some reps with the third-team defense Sunday.

Backup QB battle brewing between Kenny Pickett and Tanner McKee?

For the second straight practice, quarterback Tanner McKee took some reps with the second unit Sunday. He had a nice throw against the first-team defense, too.

Kenny Pickett’s strong showing in June is starting to feel like a long time ago. McKee getting some second-team reps seems less to do with him being great with the third unit and more that Pickett hasn’t really done much to show he deserves to be handed the QB2 job.

Report: Eagles signing former Jags linebacker Shaquille Quarterman

The Eagles are reportedly signing veteran free-agent linebacker Shaquille Quarterman to a one-year deal, according to Adam Schefter.

Quarterman previously attended Eagles minicamp in May on a tryout basis, but with Oren Burks spending much of training camp sidelined with a knee injury, perhaps Howie Roseman felt now was the time to add some depth.

Eagles camp is about to heat up — at least temporarily

The pre-teen version of myself used to have the “last” button on the television remote take me from sports to the Weather Channel. I once thought meteorology was my calling (ask me in a few years … maybe it should have been).

So indulge this brief weather report from inside an air-conditioned media building at the NovaCare Complex, where I am kicking myself for forgetting double-a batteries for the new misting spray fan I bought.

An update on the battle for WR3 after Parris Campbell's injury

Parris Campbell has suffered a setback in his pursuit of the third wide receiver job. He’s out with a groin injury. His absence allowed for Johnny Wilson to get more reps with the starters. Wilson didn’t see many targets, but the Eagles clearly have him ahead of fellow rookie Ainias Smith and second-year receiver Joseph Ngata right now. Asked about Smith, Eagles receivers coach Aaron Moorehead said that he’s still working his way back from offseason shin surgery.

John Ross is still hanging around, but he hasn’t seen the ball or stood out much in the last week. Moorehead suggested that the third receiver job could be held by multiple players based upon matchups. Britain Covey, who made a nice diving catch during seven-on-seven drills, remains in the mix. I still think that general manager Howie Roseman has a move or two up his sleeve.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson helping give the Birds their edge back

C.J. Gardner-Johnson took the podium Sunday with a set of ground rules.

After finishing up a characteristically boisterous practice session, the Eagles defensive back pulled up his hood, climbed onto the stanchion, and made it known he wasn’t willing to discuss the trials of the past. Not his exit from the team two offseasons ago, not the trade that landed him with the Eagles in the first place, not the way the Eagles collapsed late last year while he was a member of the Detroit Lions.

Eagles injury updates from the weekend

In addition to missing wide receiver Parris Campbell, who is sidelined with a groin injury, the Eagles were without their two top right guards. Tyler Steen was still out with an ankle injury. He was joined on the sideline by Mekhi Becton, who watched practice with an illness. Left guard Landon Dickerson (knee) was upgraded as a limited participant after missing Thursday’s session.

On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Oren Burks (knee) and safety Mekhi Garner (hamstring) remained out. Cornerback Eli Ricks (illness) and linebacker Brandon Smith (concussion) were added to the injury list. Cornerback Josh Jobe (concussion) was upgraded to a limited participant.
