  • The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (Le scaphandre et le papillon) is the remarkable true story of Jean-Dominique Bauby, a successful and charismatic editor-in-chief of French Elle, who believes he is living his life to its absolute fullest when a sudden stroke leaves him totally paralyzed, except for his left eye. While the physical challenges of Bauby's fate leave him with little hope for the future, he begins to discover how his life's passions, his rich memories and his newfound imagination can help him achieve a life without boundaries. Mathieu Almaric portrays Bauby, warts and all; he turns his life around within the prison of his body. With the aid of two dedicated women, played by Marie-Josee Croze and Anne Consigny, he manages to write his story letter by letter; this was the basis of the film, directed by Julian Schnabel (Basquiat, Before Night Falls) who is able to communicate Bauby’s psychological states visually. “…a movie about deprivation becomes a celebration of the richness of experience, and a remarkably rich experience in its own right. In his memoir Mr. Bauby performed a heroic feat of alchemy, turning horror into wisdom, and Mr. Schnabel, following his example and paying tribute to his accomplishment, has turned pity into joy.” A.O. Scott , NY Times, 11/30/2007 (Directed by Julian Schnabel, France, 2007, 112 min., color, in French with English subtitles. Rated PG-13 ) For more information: Movie Review Query Engine: http://www.mrqe.com/movie_r...

  • If you're looking for a film that will make you feel a little better about your own life, try either of these. They'll also make you feel better about the "human spirit" and other noble thoughts but, basically, you will realize that all the crap you complain about every day really is just crap and that you should take a chill pill and try to realize how good things really are. Both "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" and "My Left Foot" which preceded it by almost two decades feature lead characters who are suffering through horrific physical challenges which make it nearly impossible for them to communicate but, because they are just as alive inside their brains as any of us and maybe more so, they rise above their fear, pain and sadness to communicate anyway. In the end, in both films, it turns out to be less about what they say than the fact that they said anything at all that is so inspirational. [...]
