in this race. perhaps the most public push and campaign to assure lawmakers of that was in that letter that president biden wrote on monday where he said the question of how to move forward has been well-aired. it's time for it to end. now the president has been working both publicly and behind the scenes to try to rally and shore up support for his reelection bid. that includes holding those calls with the congressional black caucus meeting last night, virtually with democratic mayor is even placing one-on-one phone calls to key lawmakers including a key progressive voice, congresswoman alexandria ocasio-cortez. the president is hope is to further stop the bleeding of support that he saw from over the past week. but so far, only seven house democratic lawmakers have gone public with their calls for president biden to step aside in this race. but as you noted, there are many more who still harbor deep reservations about president biden's ability to

win in november. that is something that's senator michael bennet said last night on our air. now, the biden campaign pain in the white house say that the president will be pushing forward with his schedule today. this morning. he will be meeting with union chiefs at a afl-cio meeting later in the day, he will be attending various events for the nato summit, as well as hosting the new british prime minister here at the white house. this is all part of his efforts to show that he is out there doing the job of president. and of course, a lot of eyes will be on that solo news conference playing out tomorrow at a time when many of president biden's allies, and also those with concern say that he needs to do more in this campaign to show he's up for the job arlette. >> thank you so much more reporting coming from. where our white house team all throughout the morning. sarah kate, if there was a sign that president trump is loving all this, this is former president trump danced off the stage last night in miami. after launching several new attacks against biden and the chaos he says is dividing democrats that's right now. cnn's alayna treene has more on this. alayna, this was,

i think trump's first post-debate rally. and while biden's name was really not brought up a lot, you note this morning that for the first time this election cycle, he really dug into vice president kamala harris tell us what you heard that's right, sara and i found that to be one of the most interesting parts of his rally last night. >> and you're exactly right, this was his first rally, but also public event since the debate and what's notable about his attacks on harris is both donald trump and his team have really avoided did going after the vice president throughout their campaign. but last night that was not the case. and i think it just very clearly shows how closely donald trump and his campaign are monitoring, monitoring the situation around joe biden and questions over whether he will step aside and if kamala harris could potentially be his successor, take a listen to exactly what donald trump said

oh, whatever else you can be said about joe biden you have to give him credit for decision. >> probably just want decisions he's ever he picked kamala harris as his vice president know it was brilliant because it was an insurance policy may be the best insurance policy i've ever seen marco if joe had picked someone even halfway competent, they would have bounced him from office years ago, but no, sir. i do want to just share some insight reporting on how donald trump and his campaign are thinking about this. one is that despite what he is saying about kamala harris not being as strong of an opponent, donald trump and his team are very concerned about what it would look like if, if joe biden is not the person at the top of the democratic ticket, part of that is because they have done spent millions of dollars on modeling

and gathering data focused solely on going after joe biden. so they really don't know what having someone like kamala harris at the top of the democratic ticket would look like. and so his team is very much delighting in donald or in joe biden saying repeatedly that he is staying in the race and digging in on remaining as president and certainly when you look at the polling in americans saying they don't like either choice would be interesting to see what a new choice would mean. >> i do want to ask you about he he mentioned marco rubio, right there in his soundbite marker. was there speaking? did he give any any sort of idea as to who he's going to pick for vice president know that was the one thing we didn't hear. >> sara and he kind of dangled it in front of rubio and you're right, marco rubio was there. he spoke prior before donald trump took the stage. he had his entire family there that one moment. he actually joked that he that there were so much press at the rally because they

they do anticipate by the end of the day today that 1 million customers will be back online. but that means there will still be hundreds of thousands of customers without power. so incredibly frustrating times, especially as the heat continues n in that region intensely here in these summer months. but centerpoint says the goal as of today is to get at least 1 million customers back online. but that is going to take some time and it's not exactly clear how much longer other here's will have to wait. this is what center point is saying now it's going to be days. >> i mean, look at look at the last of it in june. i mean, in may, we had just under 1 million people without power. i don't know if you recall that. we restored power to 1 million people in four-and-a-half days and now we're at 2.2 million and john political squabbling and turn on top of all of this president biden told the houston chronicle yesterday

firearm at the film's cinematographer, halyna hutchins that's where their case is. they're going to take things back to what a reasonable person would have done, what a reason tenable person not have checked that gun themselves before pointing it at another human being. you don't have to be a firearms expert to know that the biggest rule in firearm safety, as you never pointed anything, you don't intend to shoot. that is going to be the biggest problem sara for alec baldwin pointing of the gun at halyna hutchins. >> but of course this was a movie. there was an armorer who has also charged in this case. what will the defense be trying to hit for the jury? >> the operability of the firearm sara, you mentioned how prosecutors had charged alec baldwin and then they withdrew the charges then they recharge tim. part of that recharging decision was done after some lab testing on the firearm and the state created a really big

problem for themselves in the lab. they managed to break the firearm during the testing. they did a drop test, they did a mallatt test. all these tests that quite frankly were unnecessary for the issue at hand. in doing that, the firearm is no longer in its original condition so now we really don't know how it was operating back in october of 2021, and that's going to be so key for the defense here because they can point to a malfunction and the fact that they didn't get a chance to do their own independent testing on that gun. so the state has had to reassemble the guns. sara in order to get it operable again, you can expect the defense to make a huge deal about this in alec baldwin's defense case. >> i do want to also ask you about this question, potential jurors of one of alec baldwin's attorneys appear to reference his snl impression of donald trump. why do you think they asked about that? >> sara? that's something interesting. i took a look at the jury questionnaire and the

one question that stuck out as not being standard to me was party affiliation and where this could come into play is politics. we know that alec baldwin has been as? someone who has spoken out against former president donald trump and he's also someone who is an anti gun advocate. so the idea for these attorneys who are doing the voir deir or the jury questioning is to make sure you have everybody who is not going to bring any politics into that courtroom. you can't have anybody judging alec baldwin on his party affiliation or impressions he's done on the former president only on the facts and the law sara julie grant, it's nice to have you this morning. thank you so much for joining us. really appreciate it thank you, sara, my pleasure the democratic senator from colorado, now sticking his neck out and saying, the quiet part out loud in some respect, voicing his face here, the joe biden will now lose to donald trump after that debate performance. why he's speaking out now, and why he is still

encouraged by that. they also test drove their effort to put forth a national abortion ban when they propose that we would not have the right to make our own health care decisions in ohio. so this is very fresh for me. the fear around project 2025 is very concerning, but what i am pleased and encouraged first by is the fact that voters, when they are given the information, despite the odds, despite the polling, despite the doles in the doldrums and the gloom and doom that has been predicted even in a state that is considered ruby ruby-red, like ohio democrats, republicans independents, blacks, whites they show up in record number to vote in election years that were not considered presidential years. and so that is what i am encouraged by despite all the gloom and doom that has been reported on the news around president didn't biden's

potential issues or health my my focus is winning in 2024 and making sure get the majority back in the house so that we can make leader jeffries mistakes. the first black out i'm sorry to interrupt you there. if the stakes are as high as you laid out, right there in your own state, ohio senior senator sherrod brown has got a tough reelection battle ahead of him. he is one of the senators who has voiced concern behind closed doors about what having president biden on top of the ticket means. so if the stakes are as high as you say they are, is this the best ticket the democrats can put forward right now listen, we have two candidates in the race that both have records. >> and when you consider their records, absolutely. president biden's record is hands down. what of the best records that will go down in history. president biden harris and vice president harris have delivered for the american people. we are

still having conversations around the debate. do you want a great debater or great deliver? because president biden and vice president harris, along with democrats, have delivered for the american people. and that's what it's going to be more important also, a vision for the future. i started out talking about project 2025. it is going to be what their proposed plans are to continue to take away freedom and they have successfully done that when they elected donald trump in 2016, 2016, he was able to appoint three supreme court justice as they have dismantled decades of precedent that had been set by overturning roe versus wade. so people, women, people like me are unable to make their own health care decisions, but not for the y's voters in ohio last, they have overturned affirmative action. they have over turn the chevron case. they have made things that in my lifetime will be difficult to reverse course if

people don't show up in 2024. so the stakes are incredibly high but the good news is a record to run on to demonstrate to the people that the best indicator of future behavior is past hey, there and, when you can weather the past behavior of the candidates, i am 100% confident that yes, we have the best ticket you brought up vice president kamala harris, shoted former president trump yesterday on the campaign trail. >> in fact, he talked about her a little more than he has over the last several years. and when he discussed sure he mispronounced her name repeatedly. listen nor laffin kamala. >> he picked kamala harris. kamala harris was given two jobs and as a senator, kamala sided with socialist bernie sanders, who are leading against kamala now we're leading against everybody else first of all, what do you think about him talking about her so much now and so often

mispronouncing her name well, i think he should take a cognitive test and her name is kamila, and it's been that her entire life and perhaps we should be talking about his mental acuity. but aside from that fact, kamala harris, much like many of us black women, has been underestimated and continues to deliver in overperformed. she's been elected twice statewide, a history maker in her own right. and to me, it demonstrates that mr. trump is probably scared of vice president harris. so that is what i take away from that the enemy does not attack those that they are not threatened by. so that is what i take take away from mr. trump trying to discount dismiss, and really disrespect the vice president who has done a yeoman's job when it comes to being a vice president. she has had probably one of the most difficult

positions as it relates to trying to solidify what it is to be a vice president, no one has had to live up to the standards that she has since being elected vice president. and what i can also say is she is endorsing her president hard ticket, and i can't i don't think we can say the same about mr. trump's former vice president and to add to that, we don't even know who his vice presidential pick will be when we think about the fact that it could potentially be jd vance, the senator from ohio, that is frightening to me because we know that the maga extreme are all about trying to strip away women's rights mirrors a war on women. and that proposal its manifested in project 2025 so much shontel brown. >> thanks so much for being with us morning. appreciate it. kate. >> nauta was seen an exclusive investigation into the popular vacation rental company, airbnb. the site gives guest access to millions of listings

campuses and elsewhere related to the conflict in gaza around according to haines, has been not only posing as protestors online, it is also, in some cases been providing funding to protesters. now, look for analysts who track this kind of foreign influence campaign. this isn't necessarily surprising that iran would try to do this. haynes and others have warned that in recent years, iran has really ramped up its efforts to try to meddle in foreign governments and try to try to meddle in, in foreign politics, including the united states. they tried to interfere in the 2022 us midterm elections, as well as the 2020 presidential election. and of course, we know that iran broadly opposes israel's military actions inside of gaza. and supports hamas. also important, i think here is that iran is going to be looking for any opportunity that they have to try to exploit existing divisions within the body politic inside the united states. and of course we know sara that these protests have been hugely divisive domestically, making them a ripe target not only for iran,

fall because if donald trump is elected, multiple european officials tell me they cannot sustain the effort to ukraine without us help. and they're worried that trump might strong arm ukraine into negotiations with moscow and when we've heard that we've heard the whispers of what donald trump thinks about getting a negotiated end to this war for a long time. >> now, david about donald trump, he's campaigning once again, and he's campaigning in part on his hard line stance against for nato alliance misrepresenting nato allies and how they contribute to the alliance. but it continues to be his common refrain. let me play for everyone what he said just last night at a campaign event you know, i saved down up the first thing i figured out was they weren't paying. i said you have to pay your bills. they said sir, to ask you a question if we don't pay our bills, will you protect us from russia? i said you mean you're delinquent. he said,

matt, matt is going to be nowhere near enough. kate for the kind of challenge that is clearly going to face them for the next 102030 years. this is a generational problem and the united states is not going to be able to spend enough arm enough to bring europe to that level. and that's what i think they have not yet sort of absorbed politically. >> that is really interesting, really interesting, david, about where things are headed. kim, i had john kirby on. i want to ask you about ukraine specifically. i john kirby on i asked her about the possibility of the u.s. lifting the current restrictions on how they're putting on ukraine in terms of using us weapons. and john kirby basically said the policy that they have in place and kind of using it just over the border. policies are not changing right now but do you think it's likely to change? do you think ukraine needs it to change ukraine does have the

permission from countries like britain to fire their munitions anywhere. >> the threat is france has put certain limitations that ukraine can fire, where russians have fired at them. that's essentially what we've got from biden, but just in a certain location. so perhaps that will ramp up to the next geographic area the major problem that the biden ministration seas and nato allies see happening is the air defense isn't good enough to stop, not just the attacks on civilian targets, but especially on infrastructure. and ukraine's energy network is soviet era. so nato allies can't rush in the technology they need to fix it. and already this summer you've got kyiv, the capital with while bowers and less electricity per day. that's going to be worse than the winter so the nato allies are looking at how do we get enough air defense in fast
